Letter from Chairperson

Dear Incoming Students,

I am Stephen Bates, the 2013 orientation team chairperson. On behalf of the orientation team and the Office of Student Activities and Co-Curricular Programs, I would like to welcome you all to St. Joseph’s College, your new home away from home. Starting with orientation day, I hope that St. Joseph’s provides you the same excitement, personal and professional growth, and passion for learning that SJC has for me. As you read this letter, you may be wary of the transition from high school or another college to St. Joseph’s, wondering whether or not you made the right choice — thinking you may not find a place to belong. But I urge you to put aside your fears and come to orientation with an open mind, for you will meet peers and professors who will change your life forever.

The orientation committee and team have worked diligently over the summer to ensure your orientation day is one that you will remember. We thought of our theme “St. Joseph’s College:  Your Home Away From Home” after reminiscing of our years at SJC, and thought it perfect to instill a sense of belonging within each of you. We hope that as soon as you arrive at your orientation (Freshmen, Tuesday, August 27; or Transfer, Tuesday, September 3) you feel the overwhelming sense of community and love that we are proud to represent at St. Joseph’s College. You will have the opportunity to meet your SJC/FYE 100 class, a group of individuals with whom you will depend upon for the first semester. The team has worked to ensure that this day will be not only informative and useful, but also welcoming and reassuring.

St. Joseph’s College recently transitioned to a freshman year experience program (FYE) that allows the orientation process to be extended throughout the entire fall semester for traditional freshmen. You will meet with your FYE class, on average, once a week during Common Hour.  This course is designed to acclimate you to the College, ease any fears and help you transition from high school to college. Keep in mind that the transitional process happens outside the classroom as well. The following events are offered for students in the first weeks of school, and you are urged to attend:

  • Freshman Orientation: Tuesday, August 27, 10 a.m.
  • Transfer Orientation: Tuesday, September 3, 10 a.m.
  • First Day of Classes: Wednesday, September 4
  • Welcome Back BBQ: Thursday, September 5, Common Hour (12:40-1:30 p.m.)
  • Club Fair: Thursday, September 12, Common Hour (12:40-1:30 p.m.)
  • Investiture: Thursday, September 19, 7 p.m.
  • Evening Social: Friday, September 27, 7 p.m.

More events will be emailed to you and posted on the SJC website (www.sjcny.edu) and on the MySJC Portal as they become available.

Should you have any questions, comments or concerns between now and orientation, please contact the Office of Student Activities and Co-Curricular Programs at 631.687.4591. Also, if you have not already joined the St. Joseph’s College Class of 2017 Facebook page, please do so!  For more information on student life, please visit http://www.sjcny.edu/CampusLife/Long-Island-Student-Life-Office/393/.

Enjoy the remaining weeks of summer! The orientation team and I look forward to meeting you on August 27 (freshmen) or September 3 (transfers).

Regards,

Stephen A. Bates
